Keith,
I don't know about all of this fairy wings on John Horn stuff (however, it is actually a pretty interesting visual), but I flipped on the second turn in the first race I ever did.
I got chastized by Gerald pretty badly afterwards b/c I didn't know the "proper" flipping technique. I guess I missed that conversation.
He did say that you are supposed to hold onto the steering wheel and tuck down low. I was especially scolded for putting my hand out at the end to keep the kart off of me as it was coming to a rest with me still in it. He said putting your hand out is the easiest way to break it or your arm.
Just like Powless said, hold on and duck down until everything stops.

Derek, thanks for the tips, Ill make sure to get it right so I dont break anything or get Gerald all fired up. And also, did you also get chastised by Gerald for keeping your car running while you flipped, or was that from the corner worker when you tried to take off again and race? I think I remember you saying you kept the kart running, if so, how'd you do that? It might be a fun little trick to learn . By the way, in Nationals, if you flip a kart but keep it running, can you keep racing?
And John, Im still waiting for that nickname, Im quite interested in what you will come up with . . .

Hahaha,
Ya, I did keep it running.
I was laying on my side, the kart above me, and it was still running, albeit with fuel leaking out all over me. I just kept bliping the throttle, slid out from underneath it, grabbed the throttle with my hand when I stood up, and flipped it back over. I jumped back into it and started to go when Mr. Cornerworker came running over to deny me any more fun for my first heat.
Apparently, you're not allowed to keep going even if you flip and keep it running. As for the Nationals, I have no idea how they run things there.
I could teach you the technique Keith, but we'll have to get you to flip first.

Locally it seems like if a driver flips the Red flags comes out. Not always but a great majority of the time.
Nationally if a driver flips, it's gotta be a pretty bad flip for the red flag to come out. I really don't like this, but that's the way it is.

You show me someone who says they didn't put there arms out when they flip a kart. I'll show you a liar. (unless it was to fast of a flip and they didnt have a chance to.)
Yes, I have flipped and yes, I landed upside down on my hands, head and forearms. It happens very fast. not alot of time to decide the propper technic for landing upside down. _________________ Scott Benson

| I have never flipped a kart,,but have flipped other things, and I have kept my hands on the wheel...that is what I was taught to do....Instinct tries to take over, but you just have to grip tighter, and hang on for the ride. |

This sounds like the worst part of a flip or at least potentially. I don't think any of the cornerworkers have fire extinguishers, but maybe they should because I wouldn't want to have to wait for someone to come all the way from the pits if I were on FIRE. |

How to get the "best" from a flip???
I've found the way to the the "Best" from a flip is to not get into a position for one in the first place. Now, that said, I do know that isn't possible in racing.
To get the best:
1. Be young. Younger drivers seem to fair better than us OF's!
2. Wear protective clothing, Road rash sux.
3. Wear a un-modified neck brace. Better a broken collar bone than a broken neck.
4. Wear the best helmet you can afford. Cheap head protection means your head isn't worth a lot.
5. Refrain from "Banzai" passes on the inside of a turn with another competitor. You stand a good chance of flying here.
6. If involved, don't get upo quickly. Take stock of your injuries and get up slowly.
Woirst time in a flip for me was in 95. Doing a slow roll to the right, one to two feet off the ground, I only made 180 degrees before the ground came up to meet me. I thought I landed softly, but when I tried to push off the ground with my left arm, I found I'd brokem my collar bone, Dr said after X-rays, in three places.(Yes Scott, I too put my arm out. WRONG thing to do.) Worst I'd been hurt in all my Kart racing experience, and I'd had some dandies.
Get all the protection you can, you MIGHT need it. _________________ Jean Stafford
