I have a 11 year who wants to try karting. I might want to try it and I am 59. We both are dirt bikers. Being a single parent my budget is extremely limited. I was hoping to get her a Kart for $1000 to $1500. If I have to wait for a little more money to get the right setup I will. I do not want to make a bad choice because of money. Also I am not a great wrench so although I enjoy working on the bikes, if it a piston change on my 2 stroke I will have my buddies help me. I have just started looking and I am attending a race today to start the learning process. We are not going to set the world on fire just want to have fun like we do on the dirt bikes.
1. What Kart and motor would you suggest for my girl. She weighs 65lbs?
2. What would you suggest for me? I have read get a yam 2 stroke and put a can on it until you can drive. reading the posts it looks like you have to know what you are doing with a Yam engine. But I do love the 2 strokes.
3. Where is the best place to buy used?
4. If I am into it for mostly fun and 2 years of a learning curve what would a guess be on a weekly budget?
My thinking is we would start out and as we learned we would upgrade.
Thanks for the help _________________ If you can read this; thank a teacher

Fred,
There are a couple of main 2-stroke engine/chassis suppliers in the area; all will help you get set up properly and provide good support.
Here are the names of a few off the top of my head in no particular order:
Arrow Chassis/Woljer Engines- Slattery Racing- Pat Slattery
Birel Chassis- Stafford Racing- Gene Stafford
Energy/Margay Chassis/Yellow Fin Engines- Precision Karting Products- Francis Whaling
You can contact any of them by scrolling through the "memberslist" in this forum. I recommend speaking to each one of them first before choosing one route or the other. Some may provide better engine support and others may be better at chassis support, but all will be adequate for an entry level program.
Furthermore, at the bottom of the home page in this forum, there is a listing of used chassis' for sale. Most are in decent conditions and would be a good deal for someone just getting into karting. I'd also recommend talking to some of these sellers through the forum.
