The Start Of The Day
The weather report did not look so hot, so to speak, for the day. Scattered showers were predicted for the entire day. What we did get at the track was some fairly nice weather for 90% of the race. A brief rain delay was called in Heat 2 and one on Heat 3. A few other times had some light drizzle, but it wasn’t enough to make the track unsafe. The drivers just had to be more careful.
I did something new this time…I worked the practice session as the flagman. This means having to forgo sleeping in and getting to track by 8:30am. Sure, all of the drivers were already there, but I was in a routine of showing up at 11am. I would like to thank all of the drivers for being well-behaved during my first stint as a flagman. Classes were grouped to reduce the number of practice sessions. The idea appeared to work. I waved the checkered flag for the last time at 10:35am, a mere 5 minutes after the goal.
On To Old Turn 7
Heat 1 started at 11:20am with 11 races. As with New Castle, some classes were combined. Each heat would have 8 laps. Heat 2 started at about 12:50pm and Heat 3 start at about 3:30pm. The final lap was completed at nearly 5:00pm on the nose. The drivers were, for the most part, well-behaved. Very few penalties were dealt out. There were no accidents requiring red flags and no one had to be black-flagged off the track.
Old Turn 4 and Old Turn 7 are the best turns to work, in my opinion. Anyone can go fast in a straight line, but the real action happens in the turns. I have learned a lot by watching how each driver handles the approach and exit in each of the turns. Some of them do it right, some do it wrong, but it is educational in any case. I use what I am learning to help my wife with her kart when she practices.
I did have one call that I chose to not call involving some karts making contact. In hindsight, I still think I made the right decision, but two of the three drivers were certainly not pleased.
I have a cool moment I want to share. After the first rain delay was ended, I returned to old turn 7. I looked out over the fields beyond the track in direction the clouds were traveling and I could see quite clearly the cloud that had poured down on us. To the left and right was nothing. Under the cloud? A haze, a mist of water descending from on high. I wish I had had my camera.
See you guys at OVKA Race #7! _________________ Turn Marshal |

Now that I am in the habit of having my notebook out at the turn with me, I am going to take some more specific notes about each race and turn these silly things into something resembling an actual race report. _________________ Turn Marshal |
